CARPENTER
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the direct supervision of the Project Superintendent, provides expertise in all areas of carpentry (framing, forming and finishing) for WCPG Construction Ltd renovation and construction projects. Ensures construction and safety standards are met and exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative in performing assigned duties. Exercises tact and courtesy in contacts with vendors, contractors, and clients.
DUTIES:
Working from drawings or instructions from the Site Superintendent, performs carpentry-related tasks:
- Doing layout by measuring, marking, and arranging materials
- Cutting and shaping primarily wood (but at times could be plastic, fiberglass, or drywall) through the use of hand and power tools.
- Joining materials
- Checking the accuracy of work and making any necessary adjustments
May also be required to undertake related building tasks by:
- Setting forms for concrete construction.
- Erecting scaffolding.
- Doing finishing work such as installing interior and exterior trim.
- Framing walls and partitions.
- Putting in doors and windows.
- Building stairs.
- Laying hardwood floors.
- Installing prefabricated cupboards and cabinets.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Cleaning the site by removing rubbish and sweeping up, and/or assigning this task to a labourer.
- Preparing and submitting work documentation as requested by the Site Superintendent.
- Make suggestions for continuous improvement to company support systems, team operations and all construction projects, and will bring any deficiencies to the attention of the Site Superintendent.
- Supervising, instructing, and mentoring/teaching labourers and/or apprentices on the job, including ensuring own and others’ adherence to all company and WCB safety regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Grade 12 with either carpentry ticket or level of on-the-job training acceptable to the company (normally 5+ years)
- Knowledge of local building codes
- Experience in supervising and patience in teaching/mentoring labourers and/or apprentice carpenters
- Keep professional knowledge current through individual continuous study.
- Participate in appropriate seminars, workshops, and technical forums as required by the company.
- Dedicated to quality and service.
- Work experience with projects in the $1-5M range
- Works productively and harmoniously with others consistently
- Always maintains a professional demeanour.
- Good oral communication skills in English
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
- Must maintain Level 1 Occupational First Aid certificate.
ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIRED:
Work is sometimes strenuous. Prolonged standing, climbing, bending, lifting, twisting, and kneeling are often necessary. There is a risk of injury working with sharp or rough materials, using sharp tools and power equipment, and from slips or falls. Involves working outdoors in all types of weather.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SAFETY GEAR:
Must provide appropriate safety gear on the job site.
- Hard hats must always be worn in any work area where there is a danger of head injury from falling, flying or thrown objects, or other harmful contact.
- Properly fitting safety eyewear must be worn appropriate to the conditions of the workplace if handling or exposed to materials which are likely to injure or irritate the eyes.
- Steel-toe protective footwear must always be worn to illuminate factors: slipping, uneven terrain, abrasion, ankle protection and foot support, crushing potential, temperature extremes, corrosive substances, puncture hazards, electrical shock and any other recognizable hazard.
- If there is a danger of injury, contamination or infection to a worker’s hands, arms, legs, or torso, the worker must wear properly fitting protective equipment appropriate to the work being done and the hazards involved.
